Machine Learning and AI
Computer Vision for Drones
Empowering Agrotech with AI
To support the agricultural sector in enhancing crop monitoring and yield prediction, eDataShop partnered with a South African Agrotech startup to leverage AI and machine learning. The focus: transforming aerial imagery from drones and satellites into actionable insights for orchard management.
Our Approach
Our Computer Vision Associates played a vital role in preparing high-quality training data for the client’s AI models. Using aerial images:
- We classified, cleaned, and structured the image data for machine learning readiness.
- Each tree in the orchard imagery was manually annotated to train the model to recognize individual trees.
- The AI then autonomously identified the remaining trees, with our team validating and correcting any inaccuracies to ensure high precision.
Impact
- Over 4,000 orchards annotated
- More than 100,000 individual trees accurately tagged
- Early detection capabilities for pest infestations and crop diseases
- Enhanced data accuracy enabled timely intervention, improving outcomes for farmers globally
Result
Our work empowered the Agrotech platform with a robust, AI-ready dataset. This enabled smarter decision-making for farmers, reduced crop losses, and optimized resource use—demonstrating the real-world impact of machine learning in agriculture.
